Meet OC alumni Dylan Losell
Hometown: Millbrook, ON
Program: Animation Diploma - 2023
How did you become interested in animation? What inspired you?
I was starting to dabble with digital drawing methods when I also learned that there was a thriving animation industry right here in Kelowna. After downloading a free trial of Toon Boom Harmony animation software, I quickly realized that animation requires strong mathematical reasoning as well as artistic creativity. Finding a way to unify both of these skillsets made me feel like I had discovered my purpose. Animation was it for me!
What are some of the reasons you choose 51Æ·²è to pursue your studies? What year did you graduate from OC?
I knew that I needed to go to school to learn this discipline, and being able to stay in Kelowna while I studied was definitely a major factor in choosing OC. I had also read a lot of excellent reviews of the program online, and once I found out that 2D and 3D animation techniques were taught simultaneously it sounded like a worthwhile venture. I graduated OC in 2023.
What specific projects have you been a part of in the animation industry?
Unfortunately none of my studio work has aired yet so I can't say, but ask again in September!
Can you share where you’re working now and your current role?
I'm currently working on a personal project with some friends while I look for my next contract.
How has your Animation Diploma from OC helped you in your career?
I felt that the program was very effective at preparing me for the workplace, and there were few surprises once I started my job. I was taught how to accept and apply critique, the importance of time management and deadlines, and the overall expectations of the job. We had a lot of fun in class, but there was always an understanding that we were to treat the classroom like a studio and have a professional attitude towards our work.
Looking back, what aspects of the Animation Diploma have been the most beneficial to your career?
Through lectures we were taught how to think critically and plan a shot properly so that any decision made while animating has a well thought out intention behind it. I've kept this mindset at the core of anything that I do and I believe that it keeps my work looking solid.
Do you feel the program prepared you well for the demands of the animation industry?
The program was difficult and it felt like I was always short on time, but I was thankful for this stress testing once I started working. The time constraints of the job proved to be very real and I'm glad that I was well prepared for it.
Are there any specific tools or techniques you learned in the program that you use regularly?
My shorthand gestural drawing is MUCH stronger. This was practised a lot in our Life Drawing classes, and then directly applied in the planning stages of our assignments. I’m able to quickly produce strong poses with dimension and a clear silhouette, which I find is half the battle for an animator.
Have there been any standout achievements in your career since completing the Animation Diploma?
Nothing yet, but I'm just getting started!
What’s been the most exciting or rewarding part of your career journey so far?
Seeing my shots within a completed project, which took hundreds of people working together to create, is always extremely rewarding. It can get a bit isolating working alone for most of the time, but it's all worth it when I finally get to see the big picture.
What advice would you give to someone considering the Animation Diploma at 51Æ·²è?
Get ready to work hard! Success in this program comes to those with drive and discipline.
What do you see as the next steps or goals in your career?
I am looking to climb up the ladder from animator to team lead, to supervisor, and eventually to animation director. I also have a dream to create my own animated series one day.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey since graduating from the Animation Diploma program at OC?
The animation industry seems to have an ebb and flow. While things are quiet and you are looking for work, make sure to keep your skills sharp. Don't ever stop making things!
