Meet former OC student Austen Molloy

Hometown: Vernon, BC
Program: Animation Diploma - 2023

How did you become interested in animation? What inspired you?

I remember watching Fantasmic at Disneyland and being amazed by how the animations worked with the music and light show to create emotion. That's when I knew I wanted to work in this medium. Later, I was inspired by animations on YouTube.

What are some of the reasons you choose 51Æ·²è to pursue your studies? What year did you graduate from OC?

I learned about the program from a workshop at the Vernon campus and later took an VFX certificate in the animation classroom. I liked the location, and it was more affordable than going to school in Vancouver or another big city. I graduated in June 2023.

What specific projects have you been a part of in the animation industry?

The latest project I worked on was Barney's World, which airs on Treehouse and Max in the U.S

Can you share where you’re working now and your current role?

On my last project, I worked as a 3D animator. Right now I am working on a new reel and traveling.

How has your Animation Diploma from OC helped you in your career?

Though a degree isn't required to get a job in animation, it does help a lot. It shows recruiters you have some experience in the field already, which is helpful when looking for junior jobs.

Looking back, what aspects of the Animation Diploma have been the most beneficial to your career?

Connections through teachers have been the most helpful. That's how I got most of my jobs. And, learning to take critiques and applying the notes to your scenes to improve them.

Do you feel the program prepared you well for the demands of the animation industry?

Yes. It is a very intense 2-year program. It can be a grind, but it made me more than ready for the fast-paced industry.

Are there any specific tools or techniques you learned in the program that you use regularly?

We learned industry-standard programs such as Autodesk Maya, Toon Boom Harmony and ShotGrid(Flow). Also, learning the animation principles and how to plan a shot, which are skills that can be used in any software.

Have there been any standout achievements in your career since completing the Animation Diploma?

My little cousins watching the show I worked on and asking me to sign their toys was pretty cool.

What’s been the most exciting or rewarding part of your career journey so far?

Every day on the job is fun, and seeing what my co-workers have created and seeing it all together at the end of an episode is very cool. Hanging out with my teammates at work socials has been a highlight.

What advice would you give to someone considering the Animation Diploma at 51Æ·²è?

You get out of it what you put in. It can be a very intense program, but it prepares you well for the industry, and you can learn a lot if you put the effort in. Also, try and learn how to balance a healthy lifestyle within the workload, take walks and eat well. I've definitely learned the hard way.

What do you see as the next steps or goals in your career?

My primary goal is to work on my new reel and get back into 2D animation, so that I can apply for more job opportunities. Additionally, I'll continue to mentor students and learn from mentors to become a strong lead/ supervisor in the future.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey since graduating from the Animation Diploma program at OC?

Working remotely was a challenge at first. Having a work-life balance and staying healthy were key to staying sane.

Where can we see some of your work?
